Real Marriage

Title: Real Marriage
Author(s): Mark Driscoll, Grace Driscoll
Summary: The Driscoll's have written a controversial marriage book that has a lot of good and a lot of bad. Unfortunately, any wisdom is overshadowed by a towering wall of explicit sexual content.

Mark and Grace Driscoll have caused quite the controversy. Real Marriage attempt to be an honest, biblical look at marriage that tackles every topic from date night to sex. The book has a lot of positives, and even more flaws. I am not out to bash Driscoll, or praise him. Instead, I want to offer a balanced review of Real Marriage and its content.

Title: Blue Like Jazz
Author(s): Donald Miller
Summary: Blue Like Jazz loves Christian spirituality, and it wants you to as well. Christians all over the place (especially students) love Miller's writing and fresh perspectives. But the book's 242 pages are evidence that fresh is not always good.

Blue Like Jazz is one of those books I read because so many people loved it. The first endorsement on the back is praise from Brian MacLaren...that is a bad sign. Although the book has a couple positive moments, overall it is a spiritualized tirade against Christians and the right wing. Throw in some crude language here and there, and you have Miller's Jazz.

Title: Counterfeit Gospels
Author(s): Trevin Wax
Summary: In a day and age when a lot of pastors would rather preach about The Matrix than the Gospels, spiritual discernment is severly needed. Trevin Wax offers up a concise, to-the-point, readable book that lifts up the biblical gospel, and tears down false ones.

Wax describes the gospel as a three legged stoo. The book is separated into three sections based on this stool. Each section describes a certain aspect of the gospel, and then proceeds to reveal some "counterfeit gospels" that have appeared out of a poor understanding of that facet of the gospel itself. If you want an easily-accessible book to help you grow in discernment, look no further than Counterfeit Gospels.
