The innate goodness of man?

If you have witnessed to more than about five people, you know that almost everybody considers themselves to be a ‘good person’. Most consider themselves so good that they can earn their way into Heaven. The Bible even says that man will proclaim their own goodness and loyalty (Proverbs 20:6). In fact, if you asked many Christians if they considered themselves to be good people they will respond with a resounding, “Yes!” What do you think? Do you consider yourself to be a good person? Before you answer with that confident ‘yes’ consider these powerful words from Paul Washer…

Indeed the Bible is correct when it says, “There is none righteous, not even one.” (Romans 3:10). There are no good men; there are none who seek God (Romans 3:11). Once someone truly comes to understand that truth by use of God’s Law (Romans 7:7) there is nothing more precious than the cross. It is the knowledge of sin and what the Savior did that makes popular songs such as this one so precious:

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.”
