20 Reasons to Share the Gospel
20 Reasons to Share the Gospel
This past Saturday while open air preaching and talking to people on the streets, I had a number of people ask me, "Why are you out here? What are you doing?" Good questions. Why do (or, should) we take the time to verbally share the gospel with lost people? Why should we go out into the streets and preach the Word of God? Here are twenty reasons Christians do/should verbally share the gospel with the lost...
1. Because we love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37) and love others as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). You will talk about what you love. And how can we claim to love others if we do not talk about Jesus with them?
2. Because we are commanded to time and time again in scripture (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; 2 Timothy 4:2).
3. Because Jesus Christ is the only way to be saved (John 14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5; Acts 4:12).
4. Because a person cannot believe in whom they have never heard of, and they can never hear unless somebody tells them (Romans 10:14).
5. Woe are we if we do not preach the gospel (1 Corinthians 19:16).
6. Because our toil is not in vain when we are about the work of the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:58).
7. Because we strive to please God, not men. (Galatians 2:20). If we keep the gospel to ourselves out of fear of what others think about us, who are we really striving to please?
8. Because God was manifest in the flesh and died for our sins (John 1:1, 3:16; Colossians 2:9). That is the most important event in human history. How can we not tell people?
9. Because evangelism drives us to our knees and forces us to totally surrender to God. We tremble at the thought of sharing the gospel (1 Corinthians 2:1-5) but God is our strength (Psalm 28:8; Philippians 4:13).
10. Because God desires all men to be saved and come to knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4). If we claim we want people to become Christians, but neglect to share the gospel, we make a liar of ourselves.
11. Because man is corrupt, wicked, and sinful (Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:10-18; Romans 3:23). The things of God are foolish to natural man (1 Corinthians 2:14). But God has chosen the "foolishness of preaching" (1 Corinthians 1:21) to save those who believe. How can a sinful man turn to God unless the gospel is proclaimed?
12. Because our iniquities have separated us from God (Isaiah 59:2) but we are brought into a right relationship with God only through the gospel of Christ. Do we care that so many people are separated from God by their sins? Do we care enough to share eternal truth with them?
13. Because hell is a real, literal place, and people who die without repenting and putting their trust in Christ are going to spend eternity there (Matthew 10:28; Mark 9:43; Revelation 20:15).
14. Hell is also a place of conscious, literal torment and eternal punishment for sin. It is a place of outer darkness, weeping, and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:12), fire and brimstone (Revelation 20:10-11), punishment (Matthew 25:46), and torment (Luke 16:28). If you believe such a place exists, how can you not warn people and tell them how to stay away from it?
15. Because telling somebody was the first thing the disciples did after meeting Jesus (John 1:43-45).
16. Because Christ called the disciples to be fishers of men (Matthew 4:19). So should we be.
17. Because God is love. And He showed us His love through the cross (1 John 4:8-10). If we love people, shouldn't we share with them how God showed us His love on the cross?
18. Because there are only two ways to get into heaven: perfection or through Jesus Christ. No liar, idolater, thief, fornicator, homosexual, drunkard, covetous person, immoral or impure person, or unbeliever will inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Ephesians 5:5; Revelation 21:8). If a person is not inheriting the Kingdom of God, where are they going? See points 13-14.
19. Because God is a holy judge who cannot tolerate sin (Psalm 7:11-12; Isaiah 5:16; Habakkuk 1:13), and has appointed a day in which He will judge all (Hebrews 9:27). We must help people prepare for the Day of Judgment by preaching the gospel.
20. Because Jesus did (all four of the Gospels in their entirety tell how Jesus shared eternal truth with multitudes of people; but specific examples include John 4, 8; Mark 10:17-31).
